Geriatric Massage 24 CEs Mon-Wed 8a-5p

Geriatric Massage - our intent is to support elders and their families through touch therapies, education, training, and evidenced-based research, in order to enhance the quality of life for all.

Geriatric Massage for Robust & Frail addresses the needs of elders who are both the robust and the frail.

Robust seniors can easily make it into the massage office and get on and off a table with little or no assistance.  This class includes many techniques for use in a massage office setting.

Frail seniors may need massage delivered in a variety of positions and locations (client’s homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals, hospice care, in wheelchairs, and on beds.  These seniors are either unable to make it into a massage office, or cannot transfer onto a massage table.

Geriatric Massage will give participants the opportunity to learn:

  1. Contraindications for massage and safety measures to have a safe office environment.

  2. How to use proper forms for health and medical history, working with other healthcare providers, and tips for proper documentation.

  3. Physical and mental pathologies of aging, (such as, skin changes, foot care, edema, heart and lung issues, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, digestive conditions, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Dementia, and many more) as well as, the social-emotional challenges members of the aging community may experience during changes of lifestyle, home and companionship.

  4. Active listening skills and ethics of geriatric care.

  5. Proper body mechanics, to avoid injury to the therapist when massaging in different positions.

  6. How to recognize the signs of caregiver burnout, and the stages of grief and dying.

  7. Coping skills, and stress reeducation techniques, which include touch, massage, breathing and relaxation.

  8. How to teach seniors self-care techniques which include touch, massage, breathing and relaxation.

  9. How to teach geriatric couples how to massage each other, or give nurturing touch at home.

Comments from Therapists who participated in the Geriatric Massage class:

The teacher was able to give each practitioner practically a 1:1 tutorial while learning the techniques.  This was excellent!  Excellent, excellent class.  Obviously the instructor is so very knowledgeable in this subject, the class could easily have lasted more days.  Patty Stern, LMT 8.3.16

Tammy explains things very well and takes her time answering questions.  She is very sweet.  I love the feel of the classroom, snacks were provided and that was very thoughtful.  And Lucy was very sweet and attentive.  Blake Hudson, LMT 8.3.16
